With the increase in ‘Ransomware’ infections desktop antivirus is no longer fit to handle this alone. The rise of this type of virus has caused businesses to shut down due to data loss. Basically your data is encrypted and the attacker will hold the keys to unlocking it – they charge you Bitcoin (digital currency) to restore your data and costs can run into €1000’s.
- Firewall with integrated antivirus scanners
- Spam filtering
This is the basic level of protection and should be installed as standard on all systems including servers. Lots of choice here but solutions that alert your IT department when infections are detected are highly recommended that’s why we use Vipre. VIPRE is the small-footprint antivirus software that provides fast, powerful and easy-to-manage endpoint protection for businesses of all sizes.
Firewall with integrated antivirus scanners
This is another layer that is starting to be common place due to the increase in ransomware infections. Basically it’s a firewall/router that scans your internet traffic for infections before they reach your internal pc’s and laptops. The added benefit here is you prevent the virus even getting to your machines and thus spreading.
Email is still the number one method for infections into your network. Spam has been around for a long time and isn’t going anywhere. There are solutions available for filtering spam either on your email servers directly or through a 3rd party solution that your email is delivered to first before it hits your server. This cleans up 90%+ of the spam that you will receive on a normal day.
Even with all 3 of the above solutions in place (AV, firewall, spam filtering) the single most important level you need is backup. With backups you will always beat the ransomware infections – since you can restore from your backups after an infection you still have your data. Ransom infections themselves can also go after your backup which is important to be aware of – in these cases your safest method for backups is now cloud.
